There are a lot of great hotels in the Maldives and competition is quite tough. The Westin was a wonderful discovery: Its on a small island, surrounded by beautiful coral full of marine life and excellent facilities. Quite different from most Maldivian hotels which feature thatched roofs (which apparently isn’t Maldivian), it follows traditional Maldivian architecture and borrows its shapes from the sea (whales, turtles, conches). We stayed in one of the overwater Villas and it was very well appointed with spacious living and sleeping quarters, USB outlets, ample closet space and a beautiful deck with pool and direct access to the sea. The Gym had state of the art equipment and stunning views and space. There were three food outlets: under the guidance of the lovely GM, Mr. Brendan Corcoran, Executive Chef Gaurav has created an array of menus to satisfy all taste buds, with a great focus on healthy eating: mouthwatering buddha bowls, smoothies, power breakfast and Japanese food. The therapists at the spa are exquisite and you must try other than your classic massage, the ‘look younger’ facial with 12 different products/masks. Every room gets a butler, who had kindly communicated with us with WhatsApp prior to our arrival (along with the FO Manager) and helped ensure a very smooth stay. The only downside, unrelated to the resort, is the Maldivian Air Taxi transfers, which have become increasingly unreliable in terms of service and timing… A wonderful stay Highly recommend!
Firstly, I am not sure what the recent flurry of 1 star reviews are about, in no way are they an accurate portrayal of the resort, and should not deter anyone. We had a great time, the highlight was the unbelievable over water sunset villa – huge with stunning views and privacy. There was a glass bottomed floor in the lounge too. Incredible. The Island was beautiful. The gym is huge – the only reason I didn’t use was an excess amount of caution (no need as the resort has been entrirely free of COVID-19.
The staff were so lovely. I note comments re breakfast and we too had some issues there and food not as warm as it should be. But we must allow for this given COVID-19 adjustments. When you go from a buffet breakfast to a served one, it is much more challenging for the wait staff and kitchens. Interestingly as the resort quietened down the second half of our stay, the quality of the food was far better and excellent. Also a shout out to the GM Brendan Corcoran. He was called out in some reviews we saw… He spent 30 minutes with me shortly after I had a particular issue..and was charming and incredibly supportive.
So overall I would recommend the Westin without hesitation, definitely sunset water villas are the ones to stay in if you can get one, these cannot be guaranteed when you book.
The Westin Maldives really stands apart from any other resort that I have been in the Maldives because of its focus on health and fitness. With a state of the art, 360 degrees glass enclosed two story Reebok Gym and a multifunctional tennis/basketball/volleyball court, I can say it was one of my best work out experiences I have ever had on vacation. Furthermore, there was a running path that goes around the island covered with fully grown trees that provide nice shade under the hot Maldivian sun. We were staying in a modern beach Villa which is build right in the middle of the trees in front of your own private pool and beach giving you a sense of utmost privacy and relaxation. To add to your comfort, all the beds of Heavenly Beds, and they even had a pillow menu for the most light sleepers. Definitely try out the Japanese restaurant and the Asian restaurant next to the main pool. We ended up spending most of our days at the main pool because the best snorkeling was located in front of the pool.
