The island is recognized and designed by four ecological zones; the lagoon, the beach, the jungle and the coastal zones. The architecture in each zone is inspired by unique features from the natural and man-made environment.
The Lagoon Zone
The lagoon is the home of many sea creatures that live in or around the atoll. When we swam in and around the lagoon, we saw many marine creatures that inspired us: The Villas are inspired by manta rays, with their graceful form and distinctive cephalic lobes. The Whale Bar is inspired by the whale shark. The Iridium spa is inspired by a crustacean.
The Beach Zone
The beach is made of coral sand, a feature of which is that it remains cool throughout the intense heat of the sun. The villa is inspired by a fisherman’s hut that was found on the beach when we first came here before any construction began.
The Jungle Zone
Vommuli Island has a lush and dense jungle spread over the whole inner island. Inspired by the many mature trees and flora and fauna in this zone, we conserved and protected many trees and plants during construction to maintain the essential character. The garden villa is a reminder of the lushness of the jungle. Outside the compound walls is the rawness of the jungle, whereas inside the compound is a tropical garden with many local flowering plants that can be found in typical Maldivian villages. In the heart of the jungle is the nature discovery center, Vommuli House, a design inspired by a large banyan tree in the dense vegetation. Its distinctive branching form and space is like the roots of the tree, and in each ‘branch’ are recreational and educational eco activities that cater to and bring together different generations of a family

The St Regis Maldives is such an amazing place, we had such a good time that I am writing my review to show my appreciation. I recently had an 8-night stay at the resort, and I will be sharing my experience/review of the service and resort details.
I had decided to do a beach dinner for the proposal. They offered me a Starlight Dinner, Vommuli Magic, Orientale Express, Laccadive’s Dream, or the Cinema Bliss. They all sounded very cool and unique experiences, but I choose to do the Vommuli Magic as its sounded more romantic and secluded for a proposal. They sent me many pictures of how the set up will look like and made sure everything will be kept a secret.
Once we landed at MLE we passed through Maldivian security and the temperature check. We got our luggage and we started to proceed to the exit. There we had a St Regis employee waiting for our arrival. We were greeted and he took care of the luggage from there. Once checked in and we had our tickets he took us to the St Regis SUV where he gave us waters, and WIFI access.
We arrived to St Regis and were greeted by the staff and our butler Eddie. We were given 2 fresh coconuts and more water. We also met Ahmed (the director of rooms) where he told us we were checking into Suite 521. I had done my research and knew this room has no obstructed views and it is very private. Some of the best snorkeling on the island is just a few steps away from this room.
The major highlight of the trip was the proposal, and this could not have been done with the help of our butler Eddie. He went above and beyond. He lined up a speed boat transfer from St Regis to another island and from there take the seaplane to MLE. By doing this we would leave at 3:20pm. We choose the second option to spend more time at the resort. Eddie also checked us into a beach villa since we had to leave our over water suite at 11am. He did this so we could have a place to relax and stay until 3:20pm. In conclusion I have many other examples of their excellent service, from the Decanter wine tour, to Sunny’s (Sommelier) wine recommendations, to a private tour of the John Jacob Astor Estate. Our 8-night stay has so many stories and positive memories. I feel like our satisfaction was put top priority here, and everyone especially Eddie would try their best to make sure everything was to our liking. Even during a pandemic, they lived up to their reputation. We loved it so much we are currently planning our return. I hands down recommend St Regis Maldives for anyone considering to on traveling to the Maldives.
This was our first trip to the Maldives and the St. Regis did not disappoint. It was such an amazing experience where you were able to briefly forget about the pandemic.
Our butler’s Mariya and Shamiu were always available by WhatsApp (excellent wifi throughout the island) to shuttle us around in golf carts, showing us the island, and basically arranging anything you needed. They would stop by and see us every morning for breakfast to see if we needed anything at all.
Ahmed was able to get us into these breathtaking Sunset Overwater Villas where we snorkeled in our “backyard” and saw diverse fish and many turtles throughout the week.
Jaleel and his staff at Alba and Orientale treated us like family and would cater to our every needs. We were fortunate that Chef Devjeet from The St. Regis in Mumbai was there to train the cooks so we ordered the most amazing Indian food from off the menu. Sunny, Pop, Jenif, Athif and especially Sobree became our family for our meals and would share their personal stories at breakfast and dinner.
Even the manager Harish would constantly stop by our table and make sure we were taken care of.
Everyone on the island gets their own bikes so we were able to bike around the island and explore as well as bike to breakfast and lunch every day. The attention to detail is impeccable from the pickup/departure lounge in Male to the seaplane transfer to everything you can image at the island.
Most of all however is the friendly, caring nature of the Maldivian people. We were so sad to leave them after 5 unforgettable nights and I cannot recommend this resort enough to anyone who wants to travel to the Maldives
We were extremely excited to return to the St Regis Maldives – this time with friends – and had, once again, an amazing time. We were exceptionally lucky to be upgraded from the 2 bed overwater villa we had booked to the Cesar Balsa Villa, which was absolutely gorgeous… and massive! The villa was stunning, with every detail perfectly crafted, just as we experienced in our one bedroom villas previously. Ubad, our butler, catered to our every need, and made the trip truly spectacular. While there were several small changes to adhere to our “new normal”, the hotel made up for it in other ways… like free flowing Prosecco / mimosas at breakfast that nicely compensated for the lack of the sabrage ceremonies we had been excited about. Overall a truly unforgettable experience, and with the villa upgrade truly a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you to Ubad and the team!
